From English teacher to management trainer to retiree, Carolyn Martin has journeyed from New Jersey to California to Oregon to discover Douglas firs, months of rain, and perfect summers. She has adopted a Spanish proverb to serve as her daily mantra: “It is beautiful to do nothing and rest afterwards.” “Doing nothing” includes gardening, writing, traveling, playing with friends, and taking hundreds of photographs.

Her poems and book reviews have appeared in a variety of publications throughout North America and the UK, including Stirring, CALYX, Persimmon Tree, How Higher Education Feels, and Antiphon. Her first poetry collection, Finding Compass, was released in 2011 by Queen of Wands Press, Portland, OR, and the second, The Way a Woman Knows, was published in 2015 by The Poetry Box, Portland, OR.

Since the only poem Carolyn wrote in high school was red-penciled “extremely maudlin,” she is still amazed she has continued to write.
